I recently presented the preliminary results from a modeling project that investigated how much stream temperatures might change as a result of riparian shade restoration along tributaries to the mainstem Columbia River. The major results suggest that about half a degree Celsius of water cooling can be obtained on average for tributaries at their confluence with the Columbia River. Additionally, riparian shade restoration can offset about half the expected future 2040s stream warming for tributaries at their confluence with the Columbia River.
