I recently presented the results of a virtual experiment that contrasted freshwater mussel life history strategies (related to lifespan and age at maturity) with the relative fragmentation of a river network (movement past dams ranging from 0 to 100% complete barriers). The response variable measured/tracked population genetics statistics over 200 years for subpopulations across the river basin. This work demonstrated how longer lived species may be able to out-live the deleterious genetic effects fragmentation agents impose on species by dividing and isolating subpopulations within a once continuous, free-flowing river network.
